Vocabulary from Classical Roots: Strategic Vocabulary Instruction through Greek and Latin Roots
by Lee Mountain, Norma Fifer, Nancy Flowers
Grades 4–11
As students transition from “learning to read” in grades 1-3 to “reading to learn” in grades 4-12, Vocabulary from Classical Roots provides the access to the multisyllabic Greek and Latin-based words that are characteristic of content-area text in social studies, science and mathematics. Learning Greek and Latin roots along with prefixes and suffixes enhances a student’s ability to decode, spell, and expand his/her vocabulary.
The thematic lessons and accompanying exercises have students examine word relationships, determine correct usage of words in context, choose the best word to complete a blank, complete analogies, and use words in writing and discussion.
Teacher’s Guides and Answer Keys provide lesson-by-lesson instruction; strategies for making connections between roots, familiar words, and new words; blackline masters; suggestions for vocabulary games and word-learning strategies; and answer keys.
Presented in reproducible blackline master format with answer keys, Vocabulary from Classical Roots tests add a valuable assessment resource to the classroom. The tests feature multiple-choice questions that are compliant with standardized test formats. Types of questions include Sentence Completion, Applying Vocabulary, and Analogies.
